========================== | | | HARLEY HAHN NEWSLETTER | | #6 | | | | February 5, 2002 | | | ========================== ================== Dating and Romance ================== Are you ready for Valentine's Day? Let me help you. Just visit Harley Hahn's Internet Exploration Station and look at the newly revised "Dating and Romance" theme area: https://www.harley.com/hhies/ You'll find Web sites, Usenet discussion groups, and Internet mailing lists to help you keep your special someone happy (or help you find a special someone to keep you happy). You'll also find information about Usenet, as well as mailing lists, in case they are new to you. All the resources in Harley Hahn's Internet Exploration Station -- just like all the resources in my books -- are free. In addition to making sure that everything I recommend is free, I also do the best I can to ensure that the Web sites are as stable and non-commercial as possible. By the way, the resources in Harley Hahn's Internet Exploration Station are taken from my Yellow Pages book ("Harley Hahn's Internet Yellow Pages"). For more information about the book, see: https://www.harley.com/books/yp9.html ======= Kristyn ======= Would you like to read one of my stories? I have just put a new story, called "Kristyn", on my Web site. Here is the beginning of the story: ------------------ "There is no place more lonely," thought Kristyn, "than a big city." Usually, she liked Christmas in the city, but this year was not a good one. In many ways, her life was unfolding comfortably -- slowly most of the time; in rapid, jerky sideways movements at other times; but this year --this Christmas was not a good one because Mike was slipping away... ------------------ To read the entire story, visit: https://www.harley.com/writing/kristyn.html I hope you enjoy it. ===================== The Economic Recovery ===================== Since the spring of 2001, the U.S. economy -- as well as much of the world -- has been in a recession. Technically, a recession is defined as 6 consecutive months with no economic growth. Less technically, a recession is a time when business is bad everywhere and life is hard for just about everyone. Eventually, the recession will end, but when?. I have written an essay called "Using Information Indicators to Recognize an Economic Recovery", in which I discuss this question: https://www.harley.com/writing/economic-recovery.html If you are an economics buff, or if you invest in the stock market, you'll find this essay interesting. By the way, if you like reading about money, Chapter 12 of my book "Harley Hahn's Internet Insecurity" is devoted to a discussion of money. Here are the topics I cover: ============================================ HARLEY HAHN'S INTERNET INSECURITY Chapter 12: Understanding Money (Really!) -- What is Money? -- The Idea of Money -- Who Invented Money? -- Coins -- Paper Money -- The First Successful Paper Money -- Inflation and Hyperinflation -- The Real Lesson of History -- How Roosevelt and Nixon Ended the Gold Standard -- Business Cycles: Why Someone Needs to Be In Charge -- Who Controls the Money Supply? -- How Most Money is Created -- How the Fed Creates and Destroys Money: Part I -- How the Fed Creates and Destroys Money: Part II -- Money Desensitization -- Money and You -- Money and the Net -- The Internet Factor ============================================ For more information about "Harley Hahn's Internet Insecurity", see: https://www.harley.com/books/is1.html If you want to buy the book, see: https://www.harley.com/books/is1-buy.html I promise you, it is like no other book you have ever read. ============================= Welcome to Ms. Wendel's Class ============================= Karen Wendel is a teacher at Northeast Community College in Sheridan, Wyoming, who uses one of my books to teach a class about the Internet. To help her class learn about the Net, Ms. Wendel had them visit my Web site and sign up for my newsletter. So, welcome to: Gay, Jean, Julie, Kate, Leah, Liz, Mary, Mike, Monica, Paul, Tabetha, Thomas... and Karen. Note to teachers: If you are teaching an Internet- related course, you may want to consider using "Harley Hahn's Internet Advisor": https://www.harley.com/books/ia1.html The book is actually the third edition of "Harley Hahn Teaches the Internet". (It was renamed for marketing reasons.) Let me know if you would like a review copy. -- Harley Hahn
