THE ISLAND SYNDROME Part 2: A Link Between Biology and Technology (September 15, 2010)
We live in a world full of richness and comfort, a world undreamed of by even our most recent ancestors. However, it is also a world in which (as you will see) we are continually betrayed by the very inventions and the very attitudes we created to make our lives easier. Over the last generation we have, as a species, created tools and environments that, at times, are so contrary to our basic human needs it is common for many of us to spend a great deal of time living outside our biological comfort range. As I discussed in Part I, much of this is due to an over-abundance of junk communication, bad technology habits, and low-nutrient food.
Until our needs are met in a way that truly
satisfies us, we will never be satiated.
It is a fact of human nature that, unless our needs are met in a way that truly satisfies us, we will never be satiated, and — at the same time — we will never stop trying to get what we want, even when we don't fully realize what we are doing or why. Unconsciously, we will find ourselves habituating to behaviors that result in a type of continual, deep, biological discontent. The result is a constellation of symptoms I call the ISLAND SYNDROME: the mild, never-ending feelings of anxiety, depression, frustration, fatigue, despair, and isolation suffered unwittingly by so many people.
